Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a language based learning disorder in which children exhibit difficulty decoding words and spelling. Oftentimes, difficulties in oral language, reading comprehension, and writing are also present. Dyslexia can range from mild forms to more severe deficits. No matter the severity of the disorder, it can have a negative impact on a child’s academics, communication, and leisure activities; as well as their mental health.
Language Disorders
All children learn language in the same way, but not at the same time. Some children develop language later and may have difficulty listening or communicating their wants and needs. Language disorders can be classified as expressive, receptive or both. A social communication disorder is when a child has difficulty with the use of language in socially appropriate ways.
Speech Sound Disorders
As children learn to talk, they simplify adult speech and may say certain sounds wrong. If these errors persist past a certain age, the child may have a speech sound disorder. All sounds have a different age in which a child should have mastered the production. Speech sound disorders can be classified as an articulation disorder or a phonological disorder.
Cognitive Communication
A cognitive communication disorder is when a child’s communication is affected by disruption of cognitive processes. This can include attention, memory, organization, problem solving/reasoning, and executive functions. Problems in these areas can negatively impact all areas of communication, including speaking, listening, reading, writing, and pragmatic skills.
