Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a language based learning disorder in which children exhibit difficulty decoding words and spelling. Oftentimes, difficulties in oral language, reading comprehension, and writing are also present. Dyslexia can range from mild forms to more severe deficits. No matter the severity of the disorder, it can have a negative impact on a child’s academics, communication, and leisure activities; as well as their mental health.
Language Disorders
All children learn language in the same way, but not at the same time. Some children develop language later and may have difficulty listening or communicating their wants and needs. Language disorders can be classified as expressive, receptive or both. A social communication disorder is when a child has difficulty with the use of language in socially appropriate ways.
Speech Sound Disorders
As children learn to talk, they simplify adult speech and may say certain sounds wrong. If these errors persist past a certain age, the child may have a speech sound disorder. All sounds have a different age in which a child should have mastered the production. Speech sound disorders can be classified as an articulation disorder or a phonological disorder.
Cognitive Communication
A cognitive communication disorder is when a child’s communication is affected by disruption of cognitive processes. This can include attention, memory, organization, problem solving/reasoning, and executive functions. Problems in these areas can negatively impact all areas of communication, including speaking, listening, reading, writing, and pragmatic skills.

When we started our dyslexia journey with our son, Heather was the first and only specialist we saw. She was very professional and friendly, but most of all our son LOVED her. First, Heather quickly and correctly diagnosed my son, next, she guided us down the appropriate path to fully maximize his true potential, and finally, she met and exceeded our expectations with respect to truly caring for our son and his outcome. I highly recommend Heather.

Heather has been an excellent Dyslexia therapist for our daughter and an amazing resource for us, the parents of a child with dyslexia. Our daughter was worried about the initial assessment and what therapy would be like, but Heather was so kind and positive that the two of them developed a great relationship. Over the last several years our daughter has made great strides in her reading because of Heather. We have learned so much about dyslexia and how to support our daughter because of Heather. We recommend Heather enthusiastically and without hesitation!

We started seeing Heather seven years ago for my son's Child Apraxia of Speech, over the years we have learned that he has quite a few other language and learning challenges, including ADHD, anxiety, dyslexia, and most recently, high functioning autism. Heather has been with us every step of the way. She has always made time to answer my questions, calm my concerns, and provide useful tips to incorporate therapy at home. Heather has a gift of making my son feel special and has been excellent at tailoring therapy to his needs - plus she tries to make it fun! I am extremely grateful for Heather's evidence-based holistic approach and it has been amazing to watch my son grow!
I highly recommend HBC Language and Literacy. There is no one I trust more with my son's language and literacy needs than Heather, she is everything you need and want in an SLP!
